In the past 20 years, Japan has taken the whisky world by storm. Distilleries such as Karuizawa, Yamazaki and Hakushu command astonishingly high prices at auction (and retail), and have proved fierce competitors to the Scottish distilleries which inspired their founders.
Notable Japanese distilleries include the closed Karuizawa and Hanyu, Suntory's Yamazaki and Hakushu, Nikka's Yoichi and Miyagikyo, Chichibu and others.
