A bottle of yellow Chartreuse liqueur bearing the embossed coat of arms known as 'El Gruño'. This was bottled in Voiron, France, and imported to the US by Schieffelin & Co., New York, we estimate in 1965 to 1966.
This type of bottle was produced for a short period. The embossed coat of arms was prone to breakage during transport.
Chartreuse has been produced by Carthusian monks in France since 1737. In the early 20th century, the monastery and distillery were nationalised by the French government. The monks, unwilling to give up their secret recipe, moved production to Tarragona, Spain. They later returned home and today all Chartreuse is produced in France.
The label states that this bottle is one pint (47.3cl), but the bottom of the bottle is embossed with '0.70L'. We suspect the label is a misprint, as this appears to be a 70cl bottle.
Please see images for fill level and label condition. Note damage to the labels. This has been dipped in wax by a previous owner to prevent evaporation.
Note the absence of a condition statement does not imply that this lot is in perfect condition or free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of ageing.
This bottle does not appear to be leaking. While we take every care to pack bottles securely we cannot guarantee that old corks and closures will not leak in transit.
