A litre bottle of Alchermes, an Italian liqueur produced by Fratelli Pilla & C. The duty medal indicates this was bottled between 1947 and 1949.

Alchermes is an Italian liqueur flavoured with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and vanilla. Traditionally, the liqueur derived is colour from the addition of Kermes, a small insect that gives the drink its name. This fact made the drink unpopular in the early 20th century and coal tar extracts were more commonly used for colouring. Alchermes is an ingredient in many Italian desserts, including Zuppa Inglese.
