A bottle of Old Pulteney 30 Year Old, presented in an engraved wooden box. This was matured in ex-bourbon American oak casks and bottled without added colour or chill-filtration. This is a 75cl bottle and was released for the US market.
The distillery's windswept location, use of traditional worm tubs to cool the spirit, and a wash still which lacks the 'swan neck' (a unique shape mirrored in Old Pulteney bottles), create the maritime malt that whisky writer Jim Murray called 'unashamedly excellent'.
Old Pulteney distillery was founded in Wick in 1826 and was for many years the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland. Built during the town's 'herring boom', the distillery was only accessible by sea; with barley shipped in and whisky shipped out, many of the distillery workers were also herring fishermen. With over 7000 workers arriving in the town each day during herring season (and 500 gallons of whisky consumed per day!), Wick became a lawless place. Troops and gunboats were called in to keep the peace and the sale of alcohol was prohibited, a ban which lasted until 1947.
