Description

A 50cl bottle of Der Lachs Goldwasser produced in Germany, bottled at 40% ABV with 22-carat gold flakes in the liquid. We estimate this was bottled in the 1980s.

Der Lachs was founded in Danzig (Gdansk) in 1598 by Ambrosius Vermeulen, the inventor of Goldwasser, a liqueur flavoured with roots and herbs and noted for the inclusion of gold flakes in the bottle. In the 16th century, alchemy was at its high point and gold was deemed to have several health benefits. Der Lachs ('The Salmon') opened another factory in Berlin in 1922, and by 1945 had ceased production in Danzig when the city became part of Poland.
