To mark Earth Day on 22 April 2021, Place of the Way challenged 16 of the world’s best bartenders to create a selection of wildlife-inspired cocktails. Each cocktail represents one of the world’s most endangered animals and all proceeds will go to the World Wildlife Fund, a leading conservation organisation with a mission to create a world where people and wildlife can thrive together..
A 50cl bottle of Gardener of the Forest Non-Alcoholic Cocktail, created by Paul Mathew, founder of Everleaf Drinks.
Paul had this to say of his creation: 'Orang-utans are known as the gardeners of the forest as their varied diet spreads fruit seeds far and wide, regenerating and expanding their native forests. Figs are a favourite, hence this cocktail, combining my non-alcoholic bittersweet aperitif Everleaf Forest, with deliciously rich figs and succulent blood oranges.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit orang-utans in Borneo twice, once as a conservation biologist when studying forests in Sarawak, and again almost twenty years later after a career change to bartending! Both times were to rehabilitation centres, as over those 20 years these amazing Great Apes have remained Critically Endangered due to loss of habitat (much through the planting of oil palm plantations) and the illegal wildlife trade.
As well as being one of our closest relatives, these charismatic people of the forest are an essential part of one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. I’m delighted to be part of this spirit animal initiative, and hope this contributes in some small way to their conservation.'
