A bottle of 1996 Gaja Costa Russi Nebbiolo from the Langhe, Italy.
The Gaja winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, the family having arrived from Spain during the 17th century. Angelo Gaja, born in 1940, began his career with the company in 1961 at the age of 21, introducing strict quality controls and wine making practices previously unheard of in Barbaresco, becoming in the process, as wine writer Nicolas Belfrage, described, 'the man who dragged Piedmont into the modern world'.
'The 1996 Costa Russi reminds me of how a great Zinfandel or a great red Burgundy would taste if made by Angelo Gaja. A seductive nose of black raspberries, violets, licorice, and pain grille is followed by a rich wine with pure black fruit flavors intertwined with sweet, smoky oak. Full-bodied, with ripe tannin, this internationally-styled, stunningly proportioned, big, compelling 1996 will be at its peak between 2003-2023. 93/100' Wine Advocate
