This cask was donated by John Barrett, Director of Bristol Spirits Ltd. for the Distillers’ Livery Emergency Appeal in support of The Drinks Trust.
A cask of Caroni 1998 HTR Rum.
This rum was distilled at Rum Distillers of Trinidad & Tobago Distillery, Southern Road, Caroni in 1998, and is the HTR Heavy Type Rum produced in column stills and filled into refill American oak. It was stored on the island at the distillery until 2010, upon which it was shipped to the UK and entered into cool, damp warehousing in Liverpool, a traditional centre for rum importation.
This cask remains under bond and the rum will continue to mature in cask. This cask was regauged on 28 May 2020. The regauge found that the cask now contains approximately 168.5 bulk litres at a cask strength of 63.1% ABV (this is referred to as 106.3 litres of alcohol).
If bottled immediately this would yield approximately 405 x 70cl bottles of rum at 37.5% ABV
Tasting notes:
Fine golden amber colour indicating long wood ageing leading to a powerful nose of fruit, dried spice and tobacco, typical of aged Caroni. The palate is full and powerful with similar elements combined with well controlled wood and a slight touch of kerosene, a classic Caroni feature, leading to a long well balanced and lingering finish.
A picture of the actual cask is included.
