Port Ellen 39 Year Old Untold Stories The Spirit Safe - Press Sample 3cl

A 3cl bottle of Port Ellen 39 Year Old, the first release in the Untold Stories The Spirit Safe series. This was distilled in 1978, matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and refill European oak sherry casks, and bottled at 50.9% ABV in 2018. This is the oldest official bottling of Port Ellen to date.

This was distributed as a press sample and the bottle was not originally sealed with plastic.

Port Ellen was established as a malt mill in 1825, and later developed into a distillery by John Ramsay. The distillery closed in 1983, though the maltings continue to supply many of Islay's distilleries. Stocks of Port Ellen are still available and the whisky has become highly collectible since the distillery closed, though it is no longer part of Diageo's annual Special Releases. In 2017, Diageo announced that Port Ellen distillery is to be rebuilt in its original buildings, and would reopen in 2020.
