A bottle of Ribedine Grand Vin de Dessert, produced by Violet Frères in Thuir, south-western France. We estimate this was bottled in the 1930s.
Violet Frères was founded in 1866 by brothers Simon and Pallade Violet, who originally began as street vendors before starting to import wine from Spain. The brothers' best known product, Byrrh, was created by blending their local Roussillon wines with herbs and plants including cinchona. Violet Frères sold the product to pharmacists, grocers and coffee shops, and by 1910 the company had more than 750 employees and distributed over 30 million litres of Byrrh per year.
This bottle originally belonged to the seller's mother who owned Hôtel des Voyageurs, Normandy. In the lead up to World War II, a false wall was constructed to hide her belongings in a secret cellar. This was one of the bottles that was discovered after the cellar was reopened following the end of the war.
