A bottle of Moutai. Moutai is a brand of Baijiu, a Chinese spirit produced from fermented sorghum. The state-owned Kweichow Moutai became the world's most valuable drinks company in 2017.
The back label indicates this was bottled in 1955, at a time when agricultural output and production were significantly smaller than today and Moutai was not widely distributed. We estimate this was bottled in 1955.
In 1951 producers of Baijiu in Guizhou Province were consolidated into a single producer by the Chinese State. The name Kweichow comes from the word Guizhou.
Limited quantities were made available to Chinese officials and diplomats for state functions, a tradition that has continued to this day.
The hand written inscription on the bottle reads ‘Bern, 1958’ and ‘Acquavitae’; the seller received this bottle from the son of a Swiss diplomat who was gifted it during a reception held in Bern, the Swiss capital.
