A bottler of Old Smuggler 18 Year Old blended Scotch whisky, sealed with a cork stopper. This was blended and bottled by Jas & Geo. Stodart Ltd. We estimate this was bottled in the 1950s.
The history of Old Smuggler dates back to 1835 but Stirling Bonding Company eventually registered the trade name Old Smuggler in 1887. In 1894 the Craigellachie-Glenlivet Distillery Co. acquired the Stirling Bonding Co. Then between 1890 and 1900 Peter Mackie took control of Craigellachie-Glenlivet and by 1930, Hiram Walker & Sons purchased a 60% share in the Stirling Bonding Company. In 1936, the remaining shares were transferred and ownership was complete. Hiram Walker’s newly acquired distillery, Glenburgie, became the property of the J&G Stodart subsidiary. It remained closely linked to the group’s other subsidiary, Ballantine’s, until Hiram Walker & Sons was purchased by Allied Lyons in 1987.
In 2006 the Old Smuggler brand was acquired by Gruppo Campari, who still produce it today.
Please note there is no size or ABV stated on the labels.
This bottle is from a large collection built up during the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s.
The New Zealand based collection is mainly comprised of blended Scotch whiskies and early Single Malt Scotch whiskies produced for export markets.
The bottles were inherited and conserved by the seller, the collector’s son.
