A bottle of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin 2002 Vintage Rich Champagne: a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 7% Pinot Meunier and 33% Chardonnay, with a percentage of the fruit undergoing initial fermentation in oak fermenters, lending structure to the finished wine.
The term 'Rich' first appeared in the Veuve Clicquot House archives in March 1876. It designated the wines that were to be shipped to the United Kingdom and distinguished them from 'Dry' champagnes. In 1988, Jacques Péters, Cellar Master from 1986 to 2009, reinvented the Rich based on a vintage wine, with 28 grams per litre of residual sugar in the finished wine.
