An unusual bottle of Absinthe from L'Or Special Drinks, Czech Republic. This is made from grain alcohol, extracts from herbs and spices, water and sugar. But perhaps the most intriguing ingredient is the large stick insect, Eurycantha horrida, also known as the Thorny Devil Walking Stick, which rests inside the bottle.
Absinthe originated in Switzerland in the 18th Century, and became popular in France during the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly with Parisian artists and writers. It was often portrayed as dangerously addictive and hallucinogenic, and by 1915 it was banned in much of Europe and the US. The drink experienced a resurgence in the 1990s when the ban was lifted in Europe.
