A bottle of 1978 Joseph Phelps Insignia from Napa Valley, California made from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
'Dark vibrant crimson. Well-integrated tertiary notes; well-balanced mature claret on the nose (quite a high proportion of Cabernet Franc). Firm and dusty but the fruit is still quite intense and alive. Very Bordelais. With a bit more body perhaps than most Bordeaux in the 1980s.
17.5/20' Jancis Robinson MW, October 2013

The Whisky.Auction team has inspected this lot and found it to be suitable for sale. However, please note the absence of a condition statement does not imply that this lot is in perfect condition or free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of ageing. We cannot guarantee that the contents of this bottle will be free from the effects of age, cork taint, oxidation or other faults. Older bottles often contain sediment. Wines are more fragile than spirits and older wines may be listed, at our discretion, for their historical interest rather than their drinkability. We can in no way guarantee that they are still within their plateau of maturity or to the buyer’s taste.
This bottle does not appear to be leaking. While we take every care to pack bottles securely we cannot guarantee that old corks and closures will not leak in transit.
