A bottle of 1983 Moillard Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru from Burgundy.
Clos de Bèze was founded in the 12th century by the monks of the Abbey of Bèze. After the French revolution it was divided into smaller ‘climats’ and sold to numerous buyers. It was designated a Grand Cru when the AOC system was created in 1937.
Chambertin has 14.67 hectares under vine, equating to around 68,000 bottles for the entire appellation.
This lot comes from the cellar of our Whisky Exchange colleague; author, wine educator and fortified wine authority, the late Godfrey Spence.

The Whisky.Auction team has inspected this lot and found it to be suitable for sale. However, please note the absence of a condition statement does not imply that this lot is in perfect condition or free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of ageing. We cannot guarantee that the contents of this bottle will be free from the effects of age, cork taint, oxidation or other faults. Older bottles often contain sediment. Wines are more fragile than spirits and older wines may be listed, at our discretion, for their historical interest rather than their drinkability. We can in no way guarantee that they are still within their plateau of maturity or to the buyer’s taste.
This bottle does not appear to be leaking. While we take every care to pack bottles securely we cannot guarantee that old corks and closures will not leak in transit.
