A bottle of 1983 Binger Scharlachberg Riesling Spätlese from Germany's Rheinhessen region, produced by Weingut Villa Sachsen.
The vineyard takes its name, bizarrely from the childhood disease scarlet fever where the tongue turns red. The Scharlachberg vineyard consists of 'Quarzit Rigosol' sandy soil with a high iron oxide content, resulting in orange-red earth. The vineyard was first mentioned in a document from 1248 with the name 'vocatur scarlachen;' it extends above the Bingen district of Büdesheim.
Spatlese is a German term for a wine made from fully ripe grapes, the lightest of the Late Harvest wines.

The Whisky.Auction team has inspected this lot and found it to be suitable for sale. However, please note the absence of a condition statement does not imply that this lot is in perfect condition or free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of ageing. We cannot guarantee that the contents of this bottle will be free from the effects of age, cork taint, oxidation or other faults. Older bottles often contain sediment. Wines are more fragile than spirits and older wines may be listed, at our discretion, for their historical interest rather than their drinkability. We can in no way guarantee that they are still within their plateau of maturity or to the buyer’s taste.
This bottle does not appear to be leaking. While we take every care to pack bottles securely we cannot guarantee that old corks and closures will not leak in transit.
