A bottle of 1985 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru from Burgundy, bottled by Joseph Drouhin.
Griotte is the smallest of the Chambertin appellations at 2.7 hectares, and has less direct exposure to the sunshine than its neighbours due to its northeasterly aspect, resulting in slower ripening across the season and a particularly perfumed style.
'the 750 ml version is fully mature though unlike many '85s at this point, the nose is by no means surmature. While there are soft notes of sous-bois present, the overall aromatic impression is still one of vigor as well as excellent complexity to the perfumed and ever-so-mildly earthy nose. The delicious, round and solidly complex middle weight flavors are still impeccably well-balanced and offer excellent length. This is a classic Griotte, which is to say that it is more a wine of finesse and delicacy than power, size and weight. In sum, this is lovely juice that is drinking perfectly now and as long as the storage has been appropriate, a wine that should continue to do so for years to come. 92/100' Allen Meadows, Burghound, 2011
