A bottle of Penfolds 1997 Grange from South Australia, matured for 18 months in American oak hogsheads.
'A vintage, we were told, that was 'overshadowed by huge years on each side'. It may have been overshadowed for years, but it is just great right now! Seductive texture, like sea-polished driftwood. Cedar and dark fruit and graphite and iron and touch of wild thyme. Very elegant. Shadowy but a wine with subtle strength. Early-morning campfire. Smoke and pepper. Perhaps the least rich of the five Grange vintages, but the one wine where port-sweet fruit stepped back to allow so much more complexity of herb and spice to come to the fore. I thought that this was quite special. And so lovely for drinking now. 18.5/20 points' Jancis Robinson MW November 2021

The Whisky.Auction team has inspected this lot and found it to be suitable for sale. However, please note the absence of a condition statement does not imply that this lot is in perfect condition or free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of ageing. We cannot guarantee that the contents of this bottle will be free from the effects of age, cork taint, oxidation or other faults. Older bottles often contain sediment. Wines are more fragile than spirits and older wines may be listed, at our discretion, for their historical interest rather than their drinkability. We can in no way guarantee that they are still within their plateau of maturity or to the buyer’s taste.
This bottle does not appear to be leaking. While we take every care to pack bottles securely we cannot guarantee that old corks and closures will not leak in transit.
