A bottle of Glenrothes 1966 38 Year Old, Cask 1438, this is bottle 094 of 180.
Brands Heritage Director of Berry Bros. & Rudd Spirits and Master of the Quaich Ronnie Cox explains the back story of this lot:
'I invited Charlie MacLean to London in 2002 to taste several casks of old Glenrothes. Lunch was at Boisdales where I took the precious samples and where I had asked Ranald MacDonald, the proprietor, to allow me the use of a private room.
We were thankful to get out of the pouring rain and into a little room where in one corner a bucket was placed to catch a permanent drip coming through the ceiling. I produced the samples and of the eight we selected four casks and this bottle comes from one of them. On these casks I wanted his own tasting notes acknowledged as he was and is one of the very best known Connoisseurs/Whisky Experts. So he sniffed and swirled, swirled and sniffed then tasted and swallowed his way through the first.'
‘"Very unusual" was his comment - always worrying as a producer to hear these words - but then I understood. His notes contained Bread Sauce, gravy, roasted potatoes and I seem to recall, meat sizzle. Was it, I questioned, that he was so hungry that he was imagining these things? No illusion but we discovered after a moment or two a warm draft which drew its energy from the delights of the neighbouring kitchen.
Note: I’m so happy that funds will be heading to Madagascar. A local (to me) called John Gimlette has recently written a fascinating book on Madagascar called the "Garden of Mars"'.
A link to Scotland was the missionary, James Cameron who grew up in the grounds of Murthly Castle and amongst many wonderful achievements used the grandiose (and unused) plans for a new 19th Century Murthly Castle (Perthshire) to shroud the wooden Queens Palace (Riva) in stone on the highlands just outside Antananarivo.'
