This device was originally invented by Bartholomew Sikes (died 1803), an officer in the employ of HM Excise who in the late 18th century who perfected it to measure the alcoholic content of a liquid by ascertaining the specific gravity.
This comes in a velvet lined wooden box, measuring approximately 15cm x 12cm x 6cm and contains a hydrometer, approximately 11.5cm in length, a glass beaker, approximately 12.5cm tall, a set of weights, and a tiny magnifying glass.
