The Henschke family have been making wine at their estate in the Eden Valley since 1868. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and his viticulturist wife Prue have taken their two single vineyards, Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone, and transformed them into two of Australia’s most sought-after wines. The Mount Edelstone is the longest continuously produced single-vineyard Shiraz in Australia.
Farmed using both organic and biodynamic practices, the ancient 500-million-year-old soils in the Eden Valley are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay, resulting in low yields from 90-year-old dry-farmed, ungrafted vines. The 2002 vintage was cool and low-yielding, but noted for being of one of Henschke’s most exceptional vintages in terms of quality. On the nose, aromas of sweet, ripe, intense spiced plum, blackberry and blueberry are supported by cedar and bacon characters. The palate is rich, concentrated and complex with excellent depth and structure. Layered with textured black fruits and chunky, velvety tannins with a long, intense finish.

The Whisky.Auction team has inspected this lot and found it to be suitable for sale. However, please note the absence of a condition statement does not imply that this lot is in perfect condition or free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of ageing. We cannot guarantee that the contents of this bottle will be free from the effects of age, cork taint, oxidation or other faults. Older bottles often contain sediment. Wines are more fragile than spirits and older wines may be listed, at our discretion, for their historical interest rather than their drinkability. We can in no way guarantee that they are still within their plateau of maturity or to the buyer’s taste.
This bottle does not appear to be leaking. While we take every care to pack bottles securely we cannot guarantee that old corks and closures will not leak in transit.
