Description

A 150cl magnum bottle of Gaja Ca’Marcanda Promis 2018.

Gaja’s Promis, from their beautiful Ca’Marcanda Estate in Bolgheri, is a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese. The name comes from the Italian ‘promessa’ meaning ‘promise’ and recalls the Gaja family’s commitment to their Tuscan project which began in 1996. The three varieties are grown mainly in the Castagneto Carducci area of the Estate, planted on dark soils rich in clay and loam. They are fermented separately and aged in oak for 12 months before blending and bottle aged before release. The elegance and roundness of Merlot and Syrah balances perfectly with the precision of the Sangiovese, resulting in a harmonious, balanced wine.

The Gaja family has been growing vines and making wine for five generations. They continue a tradition that was started in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in their home village of Piedmont, and now includes Estates in Montalcino, Bolgheri and on the beautiful island of Sicily. They are without doubt pioneers. The name Gaja is synonymous with innovation. Each generation has brought something new. Clotilde Rey drove the direction of quality, and her son Giovanni continued this legacy as well as acquiring some of the best vineyards in Barbaresco including the three ‘crus’ for which Gaja is so well known. Angelo Gaja introduced new methods with higher density planting, green harvesting, lower yields, temperature controlled vinification, shorter macerations, large barrique ageing and longer corks. This vision and pioneering attitude continues today in the next generation who, led by the enigmatic Gaia Gaja, continue to drive the family’s desire for perfection for which they have become famous.
