This lot contains a Sikes's Hydrometer late 19th century, Maker to the Revenue of the United Kingdom. Bartholomew Sikes (died 1803) was an officer in the employ of HM Excise who in the late 18th century who perfected this device by which the alcoholic content of a liquid could be measured by ascertaining the specific gravity of a liquid.
The box appears to be mahogany and is velvet lined. The set contains a hydrometer, set of weights and thermometer.
Please note this is missing the sliding ruler, and the thermometer doesn't appear to be the original thermometer.
