This book has a sequel called More Mountain Spirits and charts the history of Whiskey making from its origins of Scotch-Irish practitioners to its arrival in the United States in the great waves of Scotch-Irish settlers who travelled the Wilderness Trails into the Appalachians, making whiskey part of the Southern way of life.

The book tells what life was like as independent moonshiners by people who lived it discussing the craft through recipes, transport in hot rod cars, the illegal activities due to government authorization and revenue agents who eventually tracked them down.
