Moonshine, Its History and Folklore by Esther Kellner
This book charts the history of making moonshine, how it grew, why it grew and how it survived.
From the first day of a tax on Irish spirits in the early seventeenth century, moonshining became a lifestyle that found its roots in America.
Moonshining survived wars, insurrections, depressions, temperance movements, Prohibition and the Internal Revenue Service.
This is also the saga of the revenue men who stalked through the rugged booby-trapped terrain. A giant among them was Big Six Henderson, who in his years as a revenue man sent more than five hundred violators to prison. Located and distorted stills, poured out millions of gallons of mash and white lightning. The book has the most uncanny stories of still raids and a moonshiners lifestyle.
