A bottle of Dubonnet Wine Aperitif, a fortified wine flavoured with herbs, spices, and quinine. This was imported to the UK market by Schweppes Limited London, we estimate in the 1970s.
Dubonnet was first sold by Joseph Dubonnet in response to a competition run by the French government who were looking for a way to encourage their Foreign Legion to drink quinine, a bitter substance used to combat malaria. Dubonnet was also known as the Queen Mother's favourite drink.
