A bottle of Buchanan's Red Seal Finest Selected Old Scotch whisky, presented in a three-part bottle sealed with a driven cork and a metal capsule. We estimate this was bottled in the early 20th century.
A statement on the back label reads:
Analytical Laboratory, Surgeon's Hall, Edinburgh, 21st February 1891. Buchanan's Special 'Red Seal'. 'I have to certify that I have made a careful chemical analysis of a sample of this Scotch Whisky and the results compare most favourably with those obtained from the best Scotch and Irish Malt Whiskies, and prove that the said Whisky has been carefully distilled, has been thoroughly matured and is practically free from fusil oil or other noxious ingredients. It has apparently been aged in a sherry cask, has acquired a full ethereal aroma, and is in all respects a first-class and agreeable beverage.' Stevenson Macadam Ph.D. &c. Lecturer in Chemistry and Consulting Analytical Chemist.

The Whisky.Auction team has inspected this lot and found it to be suitable for sale. However, please note the absence of a condition statement does not imply that this lot is in perfect condition or free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of ageing. Older bottles often contain small amounts of sediment. We cannot guarantee that the contents of this bottle will be free from the effects of age, cork taint, oxidation or other faults.
This bottle does not appear to be leaking. While we take every care to pack bottles securely we cannot guarantee that old corks and closures will not leak in transit.
