A bottle of 1990 Bollinger RD Extra Brut Champagne, bottled in 2004. This is a blend of 69% Pinot Noir and 31% Chardonnay.

'RD' stands for 'récemment dégorgé', or 'recently discorged'. This style was first introduced by Madame Bollinger in 1961 for the 1952 La Grande Année vintage. Disgorgement is a process in Champagne making which involves the removal of the frozen sediment collected at the neck of the inverted bottle. RD Champagnes are aged on their lees for longer than most vintage releases, resulting in a more mature and complex wine.

'What an extraordinary wine! Very deep gold. Very exotic nose of heady tropical fruits and flowers. Sweet candied orange peel nose and remarkably low acidity on the palate. Very charming now - suddenly into a wine on its plateau or even perhaps starting the gentle decline. Rich and alcoholic - very much the product of its vintage rather than the house. 18/20 points.'
